Copper to Fiber Carrier Updates

Karen Weidenhammer

Do you have old copper lines or circuits?  Chances are, the local carrier will likely be getting rid of them soon.  Verizon has been undergoing an extensive project to install fiber into areas that do not currently have it.  As part of that project, they are identifying all the old copper/analog facilities that they will no longer support and eventually disconnect.  As Verizon goes through this process, they will send notification via letter to all customers to advise of any circuits and POTs lines that will no longer be supported; they will send these notifications out well in advance of when they will stop supporting the services and will start by providing a date after which they will no longer accept move or change orders against the services in question.  Once they develop a schedule for the fiber roll-out, they will send additional notifications giving you the date by which your service will need to be disconnected and/or replaced with another solution.

The process for standard POTs lines is relatively easy.  Once your lines have been identified as needing to be migrated to fiber and you’ve confirmed that the affected lines are in use and needed, they will work to run fiber to the building and when ready, will schedule a date with you for the migration to take place.  On the migration date, they will come on-site to install their new optical network device and move the lines onto it – a brief period of downtime is expected during this process.

Copper/analog circuits on the other hand cannot just be migrated – they need to be replaced with a different fiber-based solution prior to the withdrawal/disconnect date given by Verizon.  We would recommend that you stay ahead of the game and begin to do an inventory of your existing services now so that there will be plenty of time to review and come up with a new solution to replace the copper services.  Will you be ready?  4T can help by working with Verizon to identify a new solution that will work for you and then assist with getting it implemented.  We can also work with Verizon to coordinate the migration of POTs lines for you.
